Sunshine on My Shoulders Makes Me Sunburned

We're back from a wonderful mini-vacation in Florida. We loved seeing our friends and soaking up the sun. Highlights of our trip included....

- Seeing the house used by drug dealers in Miami Vice. The pool extends into the living room. CBoy has his heart set on it for Christmas. I knew I should have never let that boy watch Miracle on 34th Street.

- Watching a man wrestle an alligator. The man said he wrestled alligators for conservation purposes ("could you please leave a little something in the bucket to SAVE THE ALLIGATORS"). BUT RIDDLE ME THIS BATMAN: the pit was right beside a booth where they sold tiny alligator heads and tiny alligator feet.

- Great morning in the Ft. Lauderdale museum of Science...but starting to wonder if eventually museums will be mostly filled with computers instead of actual exhibits. COMPUTERS I CAN NOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO WORK I might mention. Looks like we'll be spending more time at Chuck E. Cheese going forward; that's technology I can master.

- Beach. Beach. Beach. Lots of frolicking in the waves. So much frolicking that Banana and CBoy had an accident--Cboy's head met Banana's nose causing a bright red gusher that went on endlessly and had the surf looking like a scene in JAWS. A bit later we realized that maybe keeping the small bloody child in the Florida ocean to rinse her off was not one of our better ideas.

- Three words we dread to hear the night before flying back: MY. TUMMY. HURTS. Immediately a million questions flew through my rum soaked brain: why do they make hotel wastebaskets so damn small... should we really have eaten at Bubba Gump Shrimp because CBoy wanted a light up glass... can we smuggle a vomiting child back on the plane in the morning.... And of course this type of thinking lead me to thoughts such as MY GAWD WHAT IF SHE HAS APPENDICITIS. At which point she was soundly asleep, having sucked on a tic tac that we told her was medicine, while I lay awake, heart thumping in the bed, until all the dark clouds that I imagined were swept away by another morning full of sunshine.

I have never been to Florida because of my irrational fear of alligators. Now I have a fear of Bubba Gump Shrimp as well.

Welcome back - Glad you didn't forget all about us! What'dya bring us back? Oranges, beach sand in a vial, a light up glass?

Sounds like an awesome trip, dreaded tummy complaint aside... I heart Florida. Weird swampy place that it is.

I wish I could use that tic tac trick on my daughter, but at 13 I think she would look at me like I was mentally deficient. Like she doesn't already...

My kid turned 12 yesterday. Not that it has anything to do with your post or the above comments. Just pondering my dozen years of parenthood as I read about your antics.

Vomit on planes...eh, decidedly uncool. not just for the sick one, but for all around them. to say nothing of your friendly neighborhood flight attendant ;-) so i'm glad you made it home without spewn shrimp all over yourselves, and your aircraft, with memories intact and rejuv'd souls. nice to have you here again! ♥

Oh, I have a story about a potty-training toddler with a stomach bug. And a flight to Florida.

But I won't gross you out.

Whats a Jewish Womans favorite wine????

"waaahhh, take me Miami, Marvin..."

I LOVE Florida, haven't been in such a long time- hope your friends saronged you and served you drinks with little umbrellas, and I would have also washed M2 off in the ocean and wondered why that triangular piece of driftwood kept circling.....

My last vacation lacked alligators, beaches and vomit. Looks like I was missing out.

You are so clever - tic tac placebo. I bet that'll work a few times (plus I hear mint calms tummies anyway). Must keep that in the back of my mind for out of town illnesses.

My kid refuses to take medicine... wonder if I could convince her it was a tic tac?

Just seeing the word Florida has me sitting at my desk on this dreary day, wishing and hoping I was on a beach somewhere, anywhere with a fruity drink in my hand...wonder if I could sneak some rum into my drink at lunch...hmmm...

the last time i was FL my mom took me to spring tryouts. a batter took a swing and i swear his cracked bat flew a couple of hundred yards in slow motion until it came to rest (if that's what you even call it) along side a very old womans head. I winced and said, "Oh my @#%*".
my mom turned to me and said, "that's why i sit behind the net."

good luck tomorrow!

Dammit! This post makes me miss living in Broward County more than I thought possible.

Too bad about the Science museum. That place used to be almost exclusively hands-on fun.

What is it with kids getting sick on trips? Last time we went to FL it was food poisoning and pick eye.
Yuck!

I have to confess it's hard for me to think of Florida these days without thinking about hanging chads, Katherine Harrison, Dubya and Dubya's evil twin Jeb. Talk about making the case for having your tubes tied.

But I digress. Glad you had fun down there with your Personal Gays and all those Cosmos.

Btw, I plan to rub it in BUT GOOD in February when Paco and I go on our annual sailing trip in the Carib. Stay tuned...

I wish all of life's problems could be solved with a Tic Tac!

OH how I miss the beach. I used to live in sunny Florida for 15 years. Now I am stuck in not so sunny Chicago. I am glad you had a weekend full of sun!

This is awesome! I've been referring to myself as "beer-soaked" for years and now I read you refer to yourself as rum-soaked. Great minds think alike! Loves it, loves it!

hello holiday girl - welcome home - hope the wee ones are well now - poor bloody banana ...

My sister in law has just spent all sunday at the denist with her ten yr old as the eight yr olds knee collided with the ten yr olds teeth at the resort pool and full on knocked a third of each top front teeth off in a nice cresant moon shape ...

makes the bloody nose look like a better option - but I bet it was hell at the time ... many hugs for safer days ahead - le

I love this post. Tic Tacs can cure just about anything.

As can rum.

My last vacation gave me 9 months of belly issues.

And people wonder why I haven't gone anywhere since...

My little one likes to steal her Daddy's tic tac's and pretend to cook them...I'm SO happy that I'm the right age zone for tic tac's to be magic medicine too.....

And the JAWS scene??!! Do you know what that did to me?? I laughed, I cried, I peed my pants...JAWS has always had that effect
