Image: The Mountain Swallows Sadness

It's Friday, Chickens.

This week brought such sadness with the news of Natasha Richardson's untimely and sudden death. My heart breaks for her two young sons, and for her husband & family, who so obviously adored her.

It is interesting to me how the deaths of celebrities can effect us so deeply. I know exactly where I was when I learned of Princess Diana's death, have friends that could not function after John Lennon was killed, and others who still tear up when they see reruns of SNL with Phil Hartman, or old footage of JFK Jr. In today's age of media madness, strangers can feel like family.

This is yet another reminder of how fleeting life can be: we must value each moment.

"And nothing can we call our own but death
And that small model of the barren earth
Which serves as paste and cover to our bones.
For God's sake, let us sit upon the ground
And tell sad stories of the death of kings."
William Shakespeare

Lorrie....this was such a beautiful, touching post. Natasha Richardson's death was so sudden and quick. When Shannon heard about it she said "I don't think I can watch 'The Parent Trap' anymore. It would make me too sad." I totally agree with her.

And really?

The beginner slope?

Holy Cow, is nothing safe?!

It can happen to anyone, anytime.

Celebrities might get more press than you or I, but they are subject to the same random tragedies and joys in their lives.

I cannot imagine the pain those kids are in - especially the one who was skiing with her.

So sad about Natasha. And sadness for her family.
And a good reason to wear a helmet when you ski. Or do just about anything that they make helmets for.

Your right, this is a tragic situation. To think she fell on the bunny slopes, not that she couldn't take a hard fall but still and then died later, soooo sad she could never say that final "I love you" to her kids and husband, my heart goes out to them!

Princess Dianas' death sent me into such a depression, I probably cried more for her then I did my own grandfather and I cannot explain that...maybe it's the way she died?

That Bill S. has such a way with words.

I remember exactly where I was when Diana died. My mom can tell you where she was when JFK was shot...I suspect it's because while we don't KNOW them, we know them. You know?

I can't stop thinking about her death yet I have never watched any of her movies. I knew who she was because of her husband and mother.

She seemed like an elegant gentle soul, see how we think we know the people we see on TV? The simple circumstances of the accident are chilling in how it all played out. I feel awful for her family, too.

*beautiful* the death of phil hartman - that's not one I hear about often, but perhaps the single most tragic hollywood story of my time.
