SiLVeR BeLL

It's the MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR! Scratch that... I meant to say: IT'S THE HAP- HAPPIEST SEASON OF ALL! You know-much mistletoeing and hearts are a-glowing and we're of good cheer.......

I Love Everything about Christmas!! (except the song "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" which for some reason just really annoys me. Especially the John Mellencamp version. Who ever thought a violin could sound exactly like a three year old whining?)

For those of you who have never experienced Christmas in the Big Apple, I thought I would write a few posts about what the Season is like in New Yawk. All of these posts will be titled Silver Bells, so feel free to skip them if you are a Hater of Whoville. However: there will be no Figgy Pudding for you...I'm just sayin....

We kicked off the season with a trip to Radio City Music Hall to see The Rockettes in the CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR. This show is...what's the word I'm looking for....oh yeah: SPECTACULAR. Lots of leg kicks, and Santa, and a 5 minute version of the Nutcracker danced by teddy bears, and real ice skaters and a double decker bus and...

LIVE ANIMALS in the nativity scene. AND OH--and little people dressed as elves. And sparkly costumes. And "Joy To The World" sung as a jazzed up Gospel tune by a quartet dressed as bellmen. And Fake snow falling from the ceiling! DOES IT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS? I think not! One could get her tinsel in such a tangle that she just about pees her pants...which is quite possible given the 25 minute wait to use the Ladies Restroom.

Everyone had a great time with just a few complaints: Sexyhusbandomine said the woman behind him was eating a hotdog and drinking white wine throughout the performance. so every scene was accompanied by the aroma of sausage and chardonnay. I told him he should have used his imagination and pretended it was chestnuts roasting on an open fire. He did his usual eye roll thing which I'm pretty sure is going to equal One Big Bag of Coal, mister.

Tonight we are buying our CHRISTMAS TREE!! We will not be bundeling up in our car and driving out to a farm to cut one down. We will be going where most New Yorkers go to get their tree..... outside our local drugstore, where some nice people from Canada have a tree stand.

An eight foot Douglas Fir will run you $150, an eight foot Frazier Fir will run you $160. We may need to go with this

What's a Christmas tree run in your neck of the woods?

I found a place you can cut down your own tree (something I did growing up in Ohio, but is unheard of in the UK) about an hour north of Glasgow. They give you a saw & gloves and trees run £3-5 per foot. So with the current exchange rate a 6 foot tree would be $27-45.

Hi Lorrie! I share your joy and excitement over the holiday season, be sure to check my blog after this weekend for some good Christmas-y pics! Anyway, down here in the south you can get a tree for anywhere between $35-$75, depending on who's selling! Want me to mail you one from the Dirty South?

Tree? I think I'm going with a Festivus Pole this year.

We're in New Hampshah. That's were all of the pine trees in the world actually started. Even still, you can buy a half-dead tree that will be dropping needles on your carpet in less than a week for anywhere between $25 - $75. More if you're out of your mind.

Once I cut one down. A live one. I was hit with Major Guilt half way through the cut, and by then it was too late to stop. I could have bought an already dead tree without all that winter wonderland trekking, but nooo - I had to kill a fresh one.

A hot dog and chardonnay!? What is wrong with You People? And by You People, I mean New Yawkers, not the Veasey family.

So, were the little people dwarfs or just small? or young.

we'll get our tree this weekend. at a cute local tree farm where the owner talks your ear off. but the pre-cuts are about $25 and there's free hot cocoa, greens, peanuts int he shell and a teeny tiny ornament for the kids. It's Tradition. And according to my son, it's Tradition that we also wait until it's o'dark o'clock until we go get it. Picking out the tree takes 6 minutes, all the rest takes another 34.

oh, and we put up a festivus pole in our front yard every year.

which looks great in the snow.

in the daylight and with no snow, not so much.

I do a fake tree every year. Bah Humbug I say.

Well, the last time I bought a live one they were running $60 and up. We finally decided it wasn't worth the hassle and the Evil Twin hated dragging it into the house, fooling w/ the tree stand and such, so we went artificial. Much easier (and cheaper in the long run). :-)

I love, love, love this post! It is quite the contradiction to my latest post where I say I can't imagine living anywhere else but a small town because everybody knows everybody...but my dream has always been to live in NY...if not for any other reason then to experience the joy of Xmas in New York! The lights, the music...OMG you are so lucky!

OMG Lorrie...I would LOVE to see NYC during the holiday season. I'm such a Christmas spaz it's not even funny.

I couldn't tell you what trees around my area cost because (gasp) I use an fake, pre-lit tree. Yes, I am that lazy. And I'm not afraid to admit it.

Every one should have a real tree and this is why - or so says the guys selling them. I'm sure they wouldn't lie though, right?

Ever hear of Christmas Pickles? I think I'm going with a Christmas Pickle theme this year.

I want to see the Rockettes sooooo bad. I'm uuuuuber jealous! :)

Ps - I have allergies so I have a 7' artificial prelit tree. I got it at Lowes for a steal. It was the display and I saved 50% because it had no box. Hootie Hoo.

Oh, I want to go to New York for Xmas! Will you take me ice skating?

Oh, a Christmas Tree here (Colorado) is $30 bucks. And we go to the grocery store to get one. We could do that whole cut one down b.s., but I feel guilty enough buying one. We had a faux tree last year and it isn't the same.

My in laws are going to NYC for New Years and I am too jealous to even talk about it.

There is nothing like Christmas in New York! My grandparents used to take me to Saint Patricks every Christmas and we are Jewish! How I miss NY during this time of year...Thanks for making me feel nostalgic.

Love,
Deb

I put up a Festivus Pole. MUCH cheaper. And after christmas? STILL STIPPERTASTIC.

We have a pre-lit, because we are a house filled with allergies. Real is bad. Ours goes up on St. Nicholas' Day to keep with tradition, but all my ornaments are waiting to go up. I love that you go our and get your tree. It sounds very nice.

You should get in the car and drive out to CT. Around here you can cut your own, any size, for $49. That would be about 90 minutes driving (depending on traffic), a few gallons of gas (it is a little cheaper here than in New Yawk), tolls (but they go onto EZ Pass, so you don't notice). I'll supply the hot chocolate if you come out here.

My goodness. We go to a pick your tree and they cut it for us farm and they are all $35. It might pay you to come here to get it!

Oh, them I know those. The nice tree people from Canada! :-D

In our neck of the woods, Father Figure puts together the amazing fake tree, and then Mom guards it like a mother bear guards its young. If she sees anyone so much as walking in the tree's general direction, she lunges forth, foams at the mouth and screams "I DECORATE THE TREE! YOU NO DECORATE THE TREE!"

Which is why we have to avoid using the hall for the duration and climb into 2nd story rooms through the windows.

"Sausage and chardonnay" made me LOL.
I make it a point to get to NY at Christmas. I stumbled into the craft/gift stalls at Bryant Park 2 years ago and fell in love with the whole scene, the skating rink, the outdoor dining, *sigh*. My husband took me to DelFrisco's where we had a cool view of the big red Christmas balls on the sidewalk. So romantic. We used to drag the kids but they were more a PITA. Now I'll get Frances to come and stay with Dewey so i can go the Friday before Chfristmas. Would love to stop by Grand Central, too. We'll see.
And I was just whining because I heard trees were still cheap, like $20 to $40 but around here we pay $60. Now I feel better.

I don't know: if a violin can sound like a cat screeching, it can sound like a 3 yr old: they're full of identical sounds.... :)

Sounds like a fun trip: Radio City Music Hall? Honey, that brings me thoughts of Fred & Ginger and all that romantic stuff...

I can usually score a pretty good tree at the grocery store or Homey Depot for around 50..
HOWEVER, last year M2 and I were at Hobby Lobby and she spotted a lime green fake tree, which is now displayed proudly in the corner of the LRoom- I prefer a fresh tree but this year I'm going low low mainenance. And I'm afraid Owen will pee on a real one.
Fabulous Pictures. maybe when I grow up I will see NY, Christmas or otherwise.........

btw Kregs pole idea is so Kreg..
does it come with naked dancing elves???

Back in the day, back in Idaho in my neck of the woods, we would just step out back and cut one down. I'm not sure what they run around here. Probably $50 bucks.

BTW...it was a Thanksgiving photo I sent you of Lo & Tracy & I with our winnings. We were all the rave.

I cannot believe anyone would eat a hotdog with chardonnay. hotdogs are much better with a nice pinot noir...

Sweet Hubby & I were in NYC for New Years a few years back. We didn't do the crazy Times Square BS, but we had so much fun! The windows were all still decorated, Central Park looked amazing, it snowed, and we went to a really cool place to ring in 2006. And while we were there, we met people from Manchester UK. It does not matter where we go on vacation, we always meet people from Manchester. It's the strangest thing...

Cannot wait for your next installment of Silver Bells.

Our Christmas trees don't run. But you can get a decent 8 footer for under $75. That's probably why they're cheaper out here... they're lazy.

Rachael said...

I have to have a Frasier Fir, and they are always the most expensive. We cut ours down and pay about $50 for an 8 ft. which I always thought was crazy expensive, but now hearing your prices, you have reinforced that I live in the sticks.

-as i bought a lighted Snoopy carrying a Santa sack yesterday, the girl at the store and i laughed about actually paying for that little tree you showed - but they were sold out...seem a Charlie Brown Christmas is a popular theme this year - so i made my own! - at least a $100 for a good frazier fir that has strong enough branches at the top to hold "Heaven" - i taught my son so well...Happy Holidays!
